Recently billed by the BFI as ‘one of the greatest ever British music video directors’. He has over 150 directing credits, collaborating with some of the world’s most challenging and acclaimed musicians and performers.
Over his 30 year career he has made films with artists such as Alexander McQueen, David Bowie, Marilyn Manson, Massive Attack, Oasis, Chemical Brothers, Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys, Dizzee Rascal, Emeli Sandé, Disclosure, Richard Fearless and Will Young and with actors Michael Fassbender, Rosario Dawson, Ben Whishaw, Stephen Graham and Noel Fielding to name but a few.
WIZ launched his directorial career with ‘Weekender’ his ground-breaking and controversial film exploring the 90’s burgeoning dance and drug culture about which Danny Boyle said “Without Weekender, there’d be no Trainspotting”. The film is now recognised as a cult classic.
WIZ trained under Polish master Krzysztof Kieslowski and developed an ability to cast and elicit defiant performances within highly visual narratives, utilising technical precision and a prescient subjectivity.
His work is as provocative as it is sensual, earning many awards, including the coveted MVA Icon honour, joining the ranks of Anton Corbijn and Jonathan Glazer. His BFI/Film4-funded short film ‘Baby’ (starring Ben Whishaw in one of his first starring roles) played at film festivals around the world including Sundance.
He is not just limited to the music film arena, and directed the pilot for the BBC TV period drama: ‘The Young Victorians’ and made his theatre debut with ‘Tainted Love’, which won New Venture Theatre’s ‘Best Play’ award.
He is currently developing a slate of features including a contemporary erotic thriller starring Ben Whishaw written by Tinge Krishnan (director of ‘Been So Long’ the 2018 Netflix film starring Michaela Coel on which WIZ served as creative consultant).
He lives in Brighton, UK and is a member of BECTU, and remains one of the UK’s top music video directors.
